Sr. Graphic Designer/Associate Art Director

The Sr. Graphic Designer / Associate Art Director is a position in the creative department. This role is responsible for setting the overall creative tone for design, photography, and cinematography on assigned accounts, and will work with internal and external resources to learn and improve knowledge in multiple ways.  This role will work with the Creative Director to synthesize the creative strategy into a variety of mediums and will serve as a hands-on team leader, overseeing the day-to-day creative processes related to the account/s. The Sr. Graphic Designer / Associate Art Director will use the usual software (InDesign, PhotoShop, Illustrator) to develop game-changing design and creative executions, as well as articulate the creative strategy to team members and guide designers and production artists to accomplish the goals developed by the account director and creative director. The Associate Art Director is also a client-facing role as needed, presenting concepts, responding to project developments, and working alongside the account planner with the creative team to bring about successful results—on brand, on message, and on time.

The ideal candidate should have:

  • 5+ years of experience in a similar agency role, and have the ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • BA/BFA in graphic design or equivalent experience
  • Experience in web design is a plus
  • Knowledge of web trends, and user experiences
  • Knowledge of production processes, with experience using digital illustration and layout software including: Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign, Keynote and Microsoft Office
  • Reasonable drawing skills
  • Knowledge of printing processes and specification; paper specification; ink specification; familiarity with typestyles, type design and type specification; stock photography; computer retouching and image manipulation; art direction of original photography
  • Possess the ability to multi-task and manage a large number of concurrent tasks and projects
  • Ability to see projects from beginning to end alone
  • Ability to plan resources for entire team to work together on single projects
  • Have excellent communication skills and be comfortable in a fast-paced environment

What will you do?

  • Under the leadership of the creative director and/or chief creative officer, the Graphic Designer / Associate Art Director will develop creative concepts in the form of sketches, mood boards, conceptual designs, and ideas across all mediums
  • Work with copywriters, designers, and other stakeholders to conceptualize solutions to problems presented in the creative brief
  • Develop design elements, select materials, and source photographers, vendors, etc., in concert with the creative director
  • Design for print and digital spaces; storyboard concepts and cinematography/animation treatments for development across all media
  • Art direct photo and video shoots, attend press proofs, and supervise freelancers as needed
  • Take initiative to proactively develop design concepts
  • Strong understanding of how creative strategy comes to life in design
  • Provide leadership within the creative team and direction for more junior designers
  • Create style guides in accordance with creative direction
  • Provide design and illustration (digital and/or traditional) from conception to completion as required
  • Work with art director/copywriter teams to concept and complete assigned projects and campaigns
  • Work with independent contractors as required per assignment, under supervision of designated art director/senior art director/creative director, and in conjunction with production manager to meet assigned deadlines
  • Maintain high skill levels in software programs required to perform assigned job function
  • Assist in archiving and maintaining digital files, project hard copies, photography, illustrations, logo art, typestyles, historical collateral samples, etc., of client materials and resources
  • Maintain communication with the art or creative director on status of assignments
  • Notify designated purchasing personnel or creative director when hardware/software requires updating or servicing
  • Maintain internal digital file backups for in-progress jobs; upload completed project files to agency archive system
  • Lead graphic designers and production artists on all projects from concept to final production
  • Review projects for style, accuracy, and strategy, and guides development of copy as needed
  • Strive to ensure timely, accurate completion of assigned projects. Keep creative director and account planner aware of project status
  • Have working knowledge of computer design software and hardware and strive to stay current in level of knowledge and abilities
  • Keep creative director informed of need to upgrade design-related computer hardware/software. Maintain said equipment/supplies for use in the creative department
  • Oversee creative solutions and present those to account planner for internal approval at a date determined in the initial creative input meeting
